What are the common application process mistakes?

Completing university application forms can be an intimidating endeavor for many. Apart from filling countless forms, there are incalculable things to remember. If you rush through your application, you are at risk of committing careless errors that can cost you a fortune.

Listed below are the common mistakes students make while filling up their application form:

Waiting for the deadline:  The gravest mistake students end up making is sending their applications on the day of the deadline. Owing to traffic congestion one may face difficulties in sending their application and run the risk of their application getting accidently lost in the cyberspace. Besides reflecting one’s bad organizational skills, last minute rush can lead to uncalled-for anxiety. Make sure everything right from your scores to recommendations to couriers is sent well before the deadline to allow time for unforeseen exigencies.

Recommendation Delays: Another mistake that can lead to rejections is approaching recommenders at the eleventh hour. While one might end up getting an average recommendation, he/she might miss out on the chances of getting a glowing recommendation highlighting their specific strengths and accomplishments.

Errors in Customizing SOPS:  You are sure to disappoint the college committee if you have put CMU instead of Syracuse on your SOP. You have passionately spoken about why Syracuse is your favorite for this particular program, and suddenly the committee discovers CMU as the ideal fit for you in the concluding paragraph. This not only reflects your irresponsible attitude but also projects you as an insincere individual. The least you could do is to proofread the application a couple of time before clicking on the submit button.

Timely conversion of GPAs: Grading systems in India are not uniform and, therefore, your scores need to be converted into CGPA out of 4. You can use services of authorized and reputed third party evaluators like Spantran, ECE and WES to get the evaluation done. Do not give in to the temptation of doing online conversion on your own. If the university does not need GPA, you can send university-attested transcripts, which again takes time. Please make sure that you have enough time at hand to complete the entire process done before submitting your application.

Resume: First things first, please make sure that you use a format that is expected by the university. The Admission Committee is looking for a neat one-page resume, and a long-winded one can leave them disenchanted. They don’t care about your personal details like your marital status and place of birth. Also, remember there are certain terms which are used differently in the two countries like Graduation in India will mean Undergraduation in US and Post Graduation in India equates to Graduation in US. In US, there is nothing called NGO; they call it Non-Profit Organizations. Listing professional experience first before the personal details is again something that you must always keep in mind.

Incomplete application: A high percentage of rejection takes place when applicants fail to send all the relevant documents. It is always a good idea to make the document checklist for every single university and cross check each document before sending out the correspondence to the University.

Not following directions properly: Not understanding the requirements of the questions displays one’s inadeptness in following instructions. It is very important to read the question well and make sure not to exceed the word limit.

Not replying to College-specific questions carefully: Many schools require students to write supplemental essays along with their statement of purpose. To save time and efforts, many a times students fill up this section hurriedly without paying heed to the questions. Overlooking these questions is viewed in a negative light by the committee and diminishes one’s chances of making it to the particular school.

Always remember that first impression matters. The earlier you start filling up your application, the better control you will have over it. The application process might unnerve you to begin with but by adhering to these suggestions, you will smoothly sail through the entire process.
