Growth is commonly understood as a function of time. I prefer to understand growth however, as something that takes place in different dimensions, sometimes greatly in one and not so much in another. The story of my own growth began in a small southern Indian village that was remote and relatively lacking in reliable power infrastructure, where I developed a deep appreciation for the potential of technology in everyday life.

Having completed my high school from a place where extracurricular activities were not given much importance, I was extremely thrilled to join Manipal Institute of Technology for my under graduation course in Electronics and Communication Engineering.Sample SOP for Masters in CS

It wasn’t long before I got accustomed to the life of engineering. Regular assignments are a part of our curriculum and during my first year, we were asked to write a review on Dan Brown’s Inferno by our English teacher. Also, we were warned not to copy the material directly from the internet as any such practice could be detected through a simple plagiarism check. This was the first time I heard that word. Later, I looked it up on the internet and understood that due to the data analytics, the task became simpler. My interest in data analytics field got a boost after I was recruited for Parikshit Student Satellite Team, an undergraduate project whose aim is to build and launch a nano-satellite. The fact that the project is totally student driven and the role of the University / faculty is limited to funding and providing infrastructure is not even the best part. The primary payload of the satellite was terrestrial thermal imaging- to seek urban heat islands in the Indian subcontinent region- and electro-dynamic tether- a deorbiting mechanism to prevent any contribution to space debris which was termed “ingenious” by Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), the first of its kind experiment by an Indian satellite in space. The team receives supervision from the ISRO. It entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with ISRO for the launch of the satellite. It was a true honor to be a part of Communication and Ground Station subsystem in Parikshit. During my tenure here, I worked primarily on tuning the beacon and payload transmitters. While the beacon derives its data from an onboard microcontroller, the payload transmitter takes it from the thermal camera. This gave me the opportunity to work closely with the Onboard Data Handling and Payload subsystems. I was surprised to learn that data analytics had profound applications even in satellites.

The images acquired from the thermal camera was to be processed, optimized and channeled to the payload transmitter. The processing of the rendered image to detect urban heat islands and predicting the ocean surface temperatures required data mining technique. Unlike the payload data, the beacon needs data warehousing to handle the information pertaining to the health of the satellite. Data from diverse modules like battery, camera, transceivers, microcontroller, etc. have to be integrated to understand its condition. Also, the data from the magnetometers which inspect and control the orientation of satellite is stored and cross referenced with the earlier received data and comprehensive reports are prepared for transmission.Sample SOP for Masters in CS

My work intrigued me to improve my knowledge in data analytics and there after my endeavors were all directed towards the same. On my senior’s advice I took up ‘Programming in Java’ and ‘Data Base Management Systems’ as my electives during the undergraduate course. These courses helped me to cover the prerequisite aspects of data analytics like database querying language-SQL and programming which further improved my logical reasoning, analytical skills.

Even though my unhindered progress in data analytics was time consuming, I wasn’t entirely neglecting my choice of my academic discipline. As a part of academic curriculum in order to achieve technical experience and get to know about how an industry works I had undergone 2 internships during my undergraduate career. I did summer research internship on “Programmable data down converter using surface mount frequency synthesizer” in National Remote Sensing Centre. My task is to design and implement the critical blocks for the frequency synthesizer in embedded C and implement the downconverter as a whole. The other internship which I did is on “Bandwidth detection for arbitrary signals using welch algorithm” in Advanced Systems Laboratory, DRDO. My task during this internship was to write a code to estimate the bandwidth of an arbitrary signal for Radar decoy mechanisms. While working for these organizations I learned professional ethics, to be a team player, leadership skills, meeting deadlines.

The long hours in the parikshit lab with the team developing the system – five hours a day after classes during work days and whole weekend for one and a half years – made me realize that I have an aptitude for research oriented work. I learnt from my experience that motivation and passion can combat all forms of fatigue and produce results. I also learnt that research is synonymous with long work hours and I was gratified to find that I enjoyed putting in hours of work for the same. My work at Parikshit opened up new areas in which research can be conducted and my team-mates at Parikshit and I frequently engage in conversations regarding improvements in the current systems and new ideas that can be implemented in current systems.

{{The Work wasn’t always smooth. While working with the beacon transmitter the IC which we planned to use for Beacon transmitter ran out of production. The obvious demotivation kicked in. Rest of the team members thought that we would lose the agreement with ISRO as the project might not be finished with in the given deadline. But I knew that our endeavors so far were not in vain. So I started to look for a suitable substitute. Meanwhile, the due date for qualifying model (Prototype of satellite for testing by ISRO) was upon us. The paucity of time made this task further more difficult. Within few days, I came up with some viable options. Apart from the technical expertise I also have taken part in extracurricular activities and won several prizes at college festivals. I actively took part in social services by helping the old aged people and educating underprivileged children through Mother Teresa NGO voluntary support. Working in the Parikshit Student Satellite Team for several hours every day for the past eighteen months has been a grueling experience, particularly after attending classes. But still, as I look at the various parts of our nano-satellite taking shape, I somehow feel more energized than ever. As part of the team, we work in close collaboration with the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), the premier space research agency, where the role of faculty is limited to funding and providing infrastructure. The primary payload of the satellite is a terrestrial thermal imaging mechanism to seek urban heat islands in the Indian subcontinent region, and an electrodynamic tether, which will act as a deorbiting mechanism to prevent any contribution to space debris. Described as ‘ingenious’ by ISRO with whom we have entered into a MoU for launching the satellite, the experiment is first of its kind in India. Our team has a qualifying model due on January 2016. If our prototype successfully clears this stage of screening, we will have six months to finish the satellite before it is piggybacked into space by one of the ISRO’s major satellite. Working on this project has been an invaluable experience. I was surprised to learn the complexity of data warehousing and analysis that is required in the functioning of a satellite. The experience has been pivotal in helping me identify my aptitude for research-oriented work. There is a prolific amount of information stored in satellite imaging data, but discoverability is a prevailing problem. The way in which images are processed and indexed can make it tedious for users to explore voluminous databases. I hope to work as a Data Scientist on high-resolution images sent by satellites to derive information and make it available to users. Such image data can provide valuable information such as speed of a container ship as it sails through a waterway, progress of an infrastructure project, vacancies in a parking lot, the concentration of traffic in a lane, etc. To that end, I seek to pursue my MS in Computer Science with a specialization in Data Science from the University of Southern California (USC).

My undergraduate curriculum has laid a strong foundation for graduate studies. The multiple courses in Engineering Mathematics helped me to develop a sound understanding of analytical concepts and tools like calculus, probability, statistics, and various numerical techniques. These concepts found their application during the elective course in Cipher Systems. Other elective courses that I undertook were Programming in Java and Database Management Systems, which helped me gain knowledge of different aspects of data analytics like database querying language, SQL, and programming. Due to my keen interest in Data Science, I recently enrolled for courses on Machine Learning and Mining Massive Datasets on Coursera.

In order to gain industry experience, I undertook a couple of internships. My first internship was at the National Remote Sensing Centre, where I worked on ‘Programmable Data Down Converter using Surface Mount Frequency Synthesizer’. The project involved the conversion of signal from higher frequency to lower frequency using frequency synthesizer, which generates a range of frequencies using a fixed oscillator. My task was to design and implement the critical blocks for the frequency synthesizer in embedded C and implement the downconverter as a whole.

The second internship was with Defense Research and Development Organization; wherein I worked on a project titled ‘Bandwidth Detection for Arbitrary Signals using Welch Algorithm’. Working in the Advanced Systems Laboratory at DRDO, my task was to write a code to estimate the bandwidth of an arbitrary signal for RADAR-decoy mechanisms. Through hard work and commitment, I managed to implement the project before its deadline, which earned me accolades from my project guide and project director. Along with honing my programming skills, the two experiences also instilled in me the values of professionalism and leadership. My interest in data science has driven me to pursue my eighth-semester project in the field of machine learning where I am planning to work on pattern recognition techniques for detecting malicious packets as well as methods to train various networking devices to drop such packets. Sample SOP for Masters in CS

Apart from academic endeavors, I have also participated in extracurricular activities and won several prizes in robotic competitions during college festivals. And for this purpose, USC, which has one of the leading Data Science departments in the world, is the perfect next step. The well-structured curriculum would serve to enhance my knowledge about the latest techniques, tools, algorithms and technologies that are employed in the industry. Also, the cutting-edge research facilities, especially the Machine Learning and Data Mining Lab (Melady), would prove beneficial for my research pursuits. I am particularly keen on involving myself in the research work and projects carried out in the Melady Lab under Prof. Yan Liu. By associating with various student organizations, I would also seek to benefit from peer and alumni interactions. Completing the program will be a giant leap towards realizing my ambitious professional targets.
