Government of India to Allow Top 500 Leading Global Study Institutions to Set Up Campuses in India
The government of India is set to welcome leading foreign universities such as Oxford, Stanford, and Yale to set up campuses in the country and award degrees. A data presented by the Union Education Department to the Rajya Sabha indicates that more than six lakh students have gone abroad to pursue their higher education by November 2022. These numbers will increase in future. A key report by RedSeer Strategy Consultant indicates that more than 1.8 million students will go abroad for higher education by 2024. The news of allowing leading 500 foreign study institutions to set up their campuses in this country can be perceived as a welcome move.
On January 5, 2023, the Regulator of the University Grants Commission has unveiled a legislatorial draft seeking public feedback to facilitate the operation of overseas universities in the country. These institutions will have an autonomy to recruit their staff and faculty, as well as set the admission criteria, fee structure, as well as scholarships for foreign and domestic students.
The Government of India is taking this step to make foreign education available and affordable for Indian students and make India an attractive study destination for students worldwide. This move by the Indian government will allow foreign universities to set up their campuses in India and tap the talented young population.
Many foreign universities have set up their campuses in India in partnership with local educational institutions. These universities allow students to study in India for a year or a few months and attend their final semester in foreign campuses. The final draft by the University Grants Commission will be presented for parliament approval soon. Once this draft becomes a law after parliament approval, the campuses can operate in India without any local partnership.
