Following is a sample letter of recommendation for MS in CS at Carnegie Mellon University:

It is a pleasure to recommend _______ for the Masters Program in Computer Science at your university. My association with _______ dates back to the second year of her undergraduate program at D. J. Sanghvi College of Engineering, Mumbai where I taught her Digital Logic Design and Applications (Semester III) and Operating Systems (Semester IV). I was greatly impressed by her confidence and her grasping ability, along with her willingness to learn. Her academic excellence was quite evident when she secured a Distinction in both these subjects.

I have noticed that _______ has always performed exceptionally well not only in all her academic endeavors but also in her extra-curricular activities. She is an extremely regular and punctual student and does not hesitate in coming to class early to clear her doubts. She takes active participation in all class discussions and laboratory 

sessions._______ is a diligent and persevering student, one who never shies away from a challenge. I therefore asked her to participate in the Intel India Embedded Challenge. The competition required students to propose designs using the Intel Atom Processors.

The application dates were very close to her finals however she took it up as a challenge and submitted an excellent abstract on Personal Rapid Transit using GPS. Her research and take on the idea was innovative and thought-provoking and my recollection indicates that the idea was shortlisted for further consideration.

_______ is doing her final year project titled ‘Interactive Animation for Distance Learning’ under my guidance. She is conducting her project work at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, IIT Bombay. In the past few months, I have had lengthy discussions with _______ regarding her project, and what struck me most about her was her insatiable desire to learn. Never satisfied with an overview of the subject, she is one who strives to gain in-depth knowledge about every significant detail. She is a tremendous team player and never seizes to offer help to anyone who needs it. While working in a group, co-ordination and co-operation is necessary and _______has not failed to disappoint on both counts. Qualities like teamwork and effective management seem quite innate along with her leadership skills. I would also like to put a special mention on her public speaking abilities. Her command over the language, clarity of thought, lucidity of expression and eloquence of speech is quite unique and admirable.
